Who we are

Founded on 1946, CHIBRO started developing its activity with the thermometer and precision instruments production followed by the production and sales of plumbing and thermal products for the civil and industrial sector.

PRESSFITTING: System description

The CHIBRO pressfitting System allows to realize, in a reliable and economic way, pipelines of various type of plants in the industrial, residential, commercial and shipbuilding fields, in the range of diameters from 15 up to 108 mm.

Austenitic Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steel, according to AISI316L standard – No 1.4404 according to UNI EN 10088.

Welded pipes of Austenitic Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steel No 1.4404 – AISI 316L standard according to UNI EN 10088.

STECKDRAIN: Introduction

Pipes and fittings of stainless steel for drainage systems under gravity or vacuum
By industries, hospitals, shipbuilding, big kitchens for communities, drainage waters are charged with several substances which are often corrosive. In certain concentrations and temperatures these chemicals may damage - chemically, mechanically or per electrolysis - the materials they come in touch with.
Therefore the piping systems that evacuate such waters must be made of suitable materials to reasonably withstand the corrosive agents.
To comply with this need STECKDRAIN proposes a range of drainage piping of stainless steel AISI 304 and AISI 316L.

STECKDRAIN programme of stainless steel
All components of STECKDRAIN programme, i.e. pipes and fittings, are obtained from electrically seam welded pipes of austenitic stainless steel.

For special purposes other materials are available.

Characteristics of the materials

Resistance to corrosion
Austenitic chrome-nickel steels have excellent characteristics of resistance to corrosion, and are therefore preferred when they come in contact with food, weather and sewage water. They are normally used by many industries (chemical and pharmaceutical, food and beverages, dairy, soap), shipbuilding, community kitchens, etc.
Steels with chrome-nickel-molybdenum, thanks to their good resistance to acids and pitting corrosion, are employed for draining certain organic and inorganic acids. On the contrary this alloy may have a limited resistance to reduced acids and chlorides.
On request is available a list of compatibilities of stainless steel AIS 304 and AISI 316 against a number of substances.

Thermal expansion
The expansion coefficient of stainless steel is very low: 1 meter of pipe heated to 100°C increases its length of only 1,6 mm.
Therefore, in designing a drain system with the STECKDRAIN program the thermal elongation can be disregarded as well as all compensators.
This is also true when a piping is laid within concrete, as steel has the same elongation factor as concrete (0.0117 mm/m°C).

Fire safety
The STECKDRAIN program complies with the codes of fire prevention.
Steel piping is listed in the A-Class of fire resistance, i.e. it is acknowledged as a “non-burning” product.

Low noise rate
The sealing ring is a gasket of a particular shape that fits within the socket of the pipe or fitting in such a way that it grips on the whole rim of the socket. When the spigot of the other piece is inserted into the socket the ring is compressed between the outer surface of the spigot and the inner surface of the socket with a positive seal.
The grip over the rim of the socket has the twofold aim to hold the seal in its place when inserting the spigot as well as to evidence to the assembler the correctness of the joint.
If the internal pressure increases, also the pressure of the seal against the walls increases, and the joint remains tight. Standard seals are of EPDM.
On request are available seals of:
CR = Neoprene
as well as FKM and Si (silicon).
Shapes and dimensions of seals for gravity and for vacuum are given at page 9.

The tightness of the joints of the STECKDRAIN piping system is according to DIN-Norm 19530 Part 2 for joints with sockets and spigots.
Pipes and fittings are tight against internal pressure as well as against vacuum. The tests which have been carried out in order to obtain the Type Approval certificates are:

  • Vacuum
    from ND 40 to ND 200* - 0.96 bar
  • Internal pressure
    from ND 40 to ND 125 10 bar
    from ND 150 to ND 200 5 bar

* For vacuum systems only ND 40-50-65 are normally used.

The socket
The socket of STECKDRAIN pieces has a double annular shape in which it is lodged the seal and inserted the spigot.
The peculiar shape of the socket gives strength to the joint and ensures its tightness in the time in spite of axial and cross stresses that may be exerted from outside and/or the weight of the piping system.
The socket and spigot STECKDRAIN joint is officially certified and the manufacture of the components of the program undergoes periodic external survey.

CUNIPRESS: System description

The basic elements of the System are the specially designed CUNIPRESS fittings in 90/10 copper-nickel in various forms and dimensions (see range of manufacture from page 19 to page 43) that allow to install distribution systems using fittings and straight pipes only.

Fittings have at each end a toroidal groove with an o-ring seal, in synthetic rubber, which deformed by a pressing tool, provides the tightness to the coupling.

The mechanical strength is ensured by the deformation of fitting and inserted pipe.

Using suitable adaptor fittings, systems realized in CUNIPRESS can be combined also with threaded or flanged standard elements.

The second element of the System are the cold drawn CUNIPRESS pipes in 90/10 copper-nickel material supplied in annealed condition and in lengths of 6 meters.

In order to guarantee a perfect tightness of the system in all service conditions, pipes have a tolerance on the outside diameter within the limits specified in ASTM B 466 M standard.

The o-ring seal is made from a special elastomeric material highly resistant to ageing, sea-water, hot and cold water (also when treated with the additives normally used for drinking water).

HERMETIC: System description

The patented Hermetic System allows to make in a safe, fast and economic way the penetrations of pipes through watertight and fire-resisting division on board of ships and off-shore units of any type and dimension.

All Hermetic penetrations have namely successfully passed the Standard Fire Test to class A 60 prescribed by IMO A.754 (18) and a hydrostatic pressure test under a head of more than 100 meter water column.

Hermetic penetrations consist of three metallic disks that have a hole in the center of their insertion onto the pipe which penetrates the structure (see Fig. 1A)
Disc A is equipped with an o-ring which makes the water seal in conjunction with the pipe, with a flat gasket that ensures the watertight in conjunction with the structure and with a gasket of intumescent material which expands, when affected by fire, sealing any gaps and making the penetration tight against fire.

The disk, when installed, are connected together by means of screws - which pass through the same hole cut for the pipe - making an assembly strong and absolutely hermetic (see Fig. 1B)

Hermetic schema

The description given before clearly evidences the advantages of Hermetic penetrations in comparison with existing techniques:

  • Penetrations are installed on board without any welding
  • The same penetration can be used on structures of steel, light alloy or of any other material as well as with any type of pipe (i.e. carbon steel, stainless steel, copper alloy, etc.) only providing they have the same outside diameter.
  • Penetrations can be directly mounted on any section of the pipeline. Therefore, is not necessary to fabricate separately the conventional penetrations - consisting of pipe spools - which are to be welded to the structure and coupled on both ends to the pipeline.


Main advantages of the System are:

  • Shorter installation time on board.
    A conventional penetration needs for the installation to weld the outer sleeve or the intermediate flange on both sides of the structure and to couple its ends to the pipeline.
    The Hermetic penetration only requires to assemble the two disks and to tighten the screws in order to press the o-ring.
  • Elimination of all problems caused by the welding process (deformation of structures, sputters on the fittings already installed, etc.).
  • Better quality of the product.
    The pipe in the penetration area is not welded and therefore it maintains unchanged its mechanical characteristics and corrosion resistance.
  • Simplified material management and higher flexibility in the use of the product.
  • Reduction of the final costs.

Application and Approvals

Hermetic penetrations can be used on pipes passing through watertight decks and bulkheads (below the freeboard deck) as well as A-60 fire-resisting divisions.
The range of outside diameters of pipes for which Hermetic penetrations are available extends from 14 mm up to 273 mm.
Their water tightness has been designed and tested to withstand a pressure of 100 meter water column, therefore they can be used on ships and off-shore units of any dimensions.

Hermetic penetrations have been approved for all the a.m. applications by following Classification Societies:

  • American Bureau Of Shipping
  • Det Norske Veritas
  • Germanischer Lloyd

If required, Approval Certificates of other Classification Societies can be obtained.
